Aerial Photography

As stated in my final project proposal, I purchased a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced drone for use within this project. As it is an airbase that I am photographing, I wanted to somehow add a different dimension to my body of work. This was a very exciting way to do this.

I went out on many different flights, learning to get to grips with flying the drone and then being able to focus on the filming. It didn't take me long to realise that this was a great bit of kit to learn how to use. It has safety features on board that tell you when you are flying too far away and too high, also a warning of battery level and a safe number of connected satellites to fly with. I made sure to adhere to these safety features with every flight.

After a few practise runs of learning how to fly the drone. I visited the airbase again ready to begin filming from the air. To do this I am able to connect my phone to the controller of the drone and a live video stream is shown on screen on my phone. I am then able to control the angle of the camera onboard. This is a 12megapixel Sony sensored camera with the ability to capture RAW images and video up to 2.7K, insanely good quality. The camera is attached to 3-axis gimbal which is what enables the camera to stay level while the drone is in motion. After looking at a few test flights while videoing I could see the quality really showing through. This would be perfect to show for the final idea.

It is difficult to show all the smal clips from the drone as they will all amount up to a final iMovie that I will put together to sit alongside my final prints in the summer show. During the video I will incorporate all of my final images along with some text to give some context to the images and give the viewers some information on the airbase. To finish the iMovie off, I will accompany all of the footage with music played by the Central Royal Air Force Band. This will bring some nostalgia to the clips and tie in with the fact that this was once a working Royal Air Force airbase.

As the drone is able to capture still images as well as moving image, I want to try and use some still from the drone withing the iMovie too. I will inturn edit these into black and white to fit in with the rest of the projects images.

These are the images that I am going to use from the stills I took on the drone. I have converted them into black and white and boosted the contrast a little to try to make them fit in with the project. These will be used within the final iMovie. They are great as they really show the scale of thr airbase and give a viewing angle not otherwise visible to every other visitor. I am really pleased with how well the images have come out and how stable the video footage is. It will add the finishing touch to my project and look professional next to my prints.
