Nicholas White

Nicholas White graduated from Plymouth College of Art in 2013. He still continues to work in the southwest. One project that has stood out to me for inspiration for my work is: 'The Militarisation of Dartmoor' project. He visited Oakhampton Camp and was allowed special access to the grounds and the firing ranges upon dartmoor. His images have a very certain deadpan feel to them. The subjects are centered in most if not all images and his images are very unsaturated.

Both of these images have a very surreal feel to them. The fact that they are both desaturated/void of much colour, it makes them both feel very cold. The first image you really feel like you are out in those damp, wet conditions just by looking at the image. The second image makes you really think about the image: what else is out there behind the shed? The unknown plays tricks with the mind, which is why this photo works so well. The complete white out and serenity is brought back by the green doors and the brick wall. Curiosity is also at work in this image as you don't know what is behind those doors. If that was taken during a sunny day, clear visibility, then it wouldnt be as strong an image and you wouldnt get the same feeling that it is military property.
