Luigi Ghirri

Ghirri was born 1943, in Scandiano, North-East Italy. Starting his career in the 1970s he was influenced by conceptual art. He created landscape images with a close crop and had a very deadpan presentation. The saturation of the images and hues, suggest a simple view of the world, seeing the richness of the landscape with an emotional value to it.

They are very subtle and have a central composition meaning they are typical for deadpan photography. They have very desaturated colours. The locations are very subtle with a very still subject matter. They have a great sense of serenity and emptiness. His choices of locations are deceptively simple, drawing you in to the image, almost making you think, what could have been in that landscape, has something been removed? It gets your imagination going and really makes you think about the work. What is also clear in his work is that symmetry really helps with the deadpan and it makes the images look a lot more professional with a well thought out composition.  In my work, I want to create this feeling of open space and make the viewer feel like they are at the air base when looking at the images. This will be vital to create great images and really achieve the deadpan landscape look and feel.
